DEATHS in 2010

MARIA R. ANJOUBAULT, 87, of OCEAN GROVE died Wednesday, January 6, 2009, peacefully at home surrounded by her son, Rene, his wife Terri, and her granddaughters Kacie and Rebecca, after a brave battle with heart disease and cancer. She was born in Vienna, Austria and came to the United States with her first husband in 1947. Her son Tony was born the same year. She was
predeceased by her second husband Gabriel Anjoubault in 1976 who was the father of Rene, her younger son. Maria was a real estate broker in Oakhurst for more than 30 years, she owned Old Towne Realty. Her zest for life, her love and devotion for all her family members and friends were unsurpassed. We will miss her! Maria is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law Antony and
Anita of Camas, Washington; Rene and Theresa (Terri) of Oakhurst and her granddaughters, Kacie and Rebecca. A memorial service was held on Friday, January 15, 2009 at the Unity Church by the Shore, 3508 Asbury Avenue, Neptune at 3:00 p.m. www.unitybytheshore.org. Interment at Fairview Cemetery, Middletown was private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care, Livingston, NJ.

IRENE MARGARET (nee: Tennant) GEORGE of OCEAN GROVE passed away at age 96 on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010. Recently a resident of Francis Asbury Manor, she had been associated with Ocean Grove since 1948. Born in Minocqua, Wisconsin into a Methodist parsonage in 1913, she graduated from Central Michigan University also having studied at Taylor University, Indiana. Her graduate work in music education was at Northwestern University and Yale Divinity School. She taught in northern Michigan for several years. In 1937, she joined a summer touring opera company. They performed in Big Rapids, Michigan, where she met Reverend Floyd E. George Jr., pastor of the Methodist Church. They were married in 1938. Throughout 58 years of marriage, they served parishes in Connecticut, New York City and Westchester. Irene and Floyd always shared a strong partnership in life and ministry. When Dr. George served as president of the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, Irene played a major role as well, one that lasted throughout her years as a member of the Ocean Grove community. She became widely known as a pianist and soloist throughout their ministry. Among many other avenues of service, Irene was president of Church Women United for the Borough of Brooklyn and played a leadership role at the Methodist Church Home for the Aged in Riverdale, NYC. She was predeceased by Dr. George, in 1996; and one son, David, in 2003. She is survived by two sons, Floyd E., III and his wife, Ann, of Rye, N.Y., and Philip B. and his wife, Carolyn, of West Allenhurst. She had seven grandchildren, Evan, Ellen, Heather, Amanda, Sarah, Christian, and Bethany; and two great-grandchildren. A family graveside service was held at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent. A Memorial and Celebration of Irene's life was held in Ocean Grove . In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fellowship Fund of Francis Asbury Manor, 70 Stockton Ave., Ocean Grove, NJ 07756.

FRANK FOLEY, 88 of OCEAN GROVE, formerly of Ridgewood, died Saturday January 23, 2010 at the MediCenter, Neptune City. Mr. Foley worked in procurement offices in various locations for the Federal Government, lastly at Curtiss Wright in Wood-Ridge. He was a United States Army Veteran, serving during World War II. Born in Paterson, he lived in Ridgewood and Hobe Sound Florida before moving to Ocean Grove. Surviving are his wife, Edna Hall Foley, his step daughters, Nancy Townsend of Ocean Grove and Janet Iannelli of Ridgewood and Ocean Grove, four grandchildren, Janet Gleason, Edward Comer, Douglas Iannelli and Darleen Iannelli and three great grand children, Victoria Hutchings and Madison and Mackenzie Gleason. A private graveside service was held at Monmouth Memorial Park in Tinton Falls. BARBARA K. HAMPSON, 82, of OCEAN GROVE, formerly of Nutley, died Friday, January 29, 2010 at the Manor-by-the-Sea, Ocean Grove. Mrs. Hampson was the Director of the Community Nursery School in Nutley before retiring in 1996. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove and the Vincent United Methodist Church, Nutley. Mrs. Hampson was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Nutley Town Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Ocean Grove. She was member of the Ocean Grove tent community since 1969. She was predeceased by her brother, Edward Kirby, Jr. Surviving are her husband, Robert Hampson, her sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and his wife, Kathy, of Holland, PA, Greg and Anita of Sparta and Cliff and Donna of Lake Mary, FL, her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Rob Beachley of Neptune, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. A funeral service will be held at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Monday at 10:00 AM. The Committal service will be at 2:30 PM at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, 255 Main Avenue, Clifton. Relatives and friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 - 5:00 PM . BRUCE JOHN BENNETT, 64, of HOWELL, died Saturday, January 30, 2010 at home. He
was a Gardner for Marlboro State Hospital before retiring in 2003. Mr. Bennett was a member of the Cornerstone Calvary Chapel, the Jersey Shore German Shepherd Dog Club, the Garden State Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club and the Freehold First Aid Squad. JANICE VARNER, 70, of OCEAN GROVE, died Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the Manor by
the Sea, Ocean Grove. She was a machine operator for Stop Nut in Harrison, before retiring. Born in Newark, she lived in Neptune before moving to Ocean Grove 20 years ago. DOUGLAS ALAN BROWN, a long time resident of OCEAN GROVE, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Medi-center in Neptune City, one week shy of his 91st birthday. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Mr. Brown was born in Newark, and lived most of his life in Maplewood. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1936 and from Seton Hall College in 1949. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Brown served in the US Army as a technical Sergeant with the 36th Texas Division in the European Theater. He spent his business career with Blue Cross - Blue Shield of New Jersey as a hospital cost formula specialist, retiring in 1970. An active sportsman, Mr. Brown was an accomplished ice speed skater and tennis player, but his passion was trout fishing on the Beaver Kill in upstate New York. He was a member for many years of the Ocean Grove Fishing Club as well as the Old Guard. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Douglas O. and Elvira E. Brown of Maplewood, and by his sister, Norma B. Dopp of Hilton Head, SC. Surviving are his brother-in-law, G. Willard Dopp of Hilton Head, SC, a niece, Gale S. Wallmark of Cincinnati, OH and a nephew, Thomas W. Dopp of Charlotte, NC. Ceremony arrangements are not being announced at this time.

ROBERT IGNATIUS GANNON, 68, of OCEAN GROVE, passed away Saturday evening, March 20, 2010 with his children at his bedside at the Jersey Shore Uninversity Medical Center, Neptune, after a valiant battle with diabetes and vascular disease. Robert or "Bob" was born on February 16, 1942 in Jersey City, NJ to Laurette Norris Gannon and William Patrick Gannon. Bob was the youngest of 5 children, William Jr., Laurette, Joseph, and Gregory. Bob was educated at St. Patrick’s Grammar School in Jersey City, NJ and graduated Marist High School in Bayonne, NJ in 1959. A stand-out athlete at Marist, Bob pitched the school’s first ever "No-Hitter" baseball game in 1958. After a brief stint at Oklahoma State University, Robert returned to Jersey City and worked in several capacities before starting Busy Bee Temporary Service Agency with his brother Greg. Robert served in the United States Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1963. Robert married Evelyn Riley in 1968 and settled in Rutherford, NJ in 1975 and attended St. Mary’s parish. Robert left Busy Bee to pursue teaching and was conferred a Bachelor of Arts Degree in the Classics, Cum Laude, in 1988 from Fordham University. Robert taught Latin, Greek, and History at Morristown High School, Westfield High School, Montclair Kimberly Academy, and at Ocean Township High School. Robert coached sports throughout his life as well. He coached baseball, softball, and ice hockey. He helped shape the St. Peter’s Prep, Jersey City, ice hockey program by coaching the junior varsity squad from 1984-1991. Bob’s unique teaching and coaching style was praised by his students and peers alike. Robert loved the ocean. He moved to Ocean Grove, NJ in 1995 and enjoyed spending his time riding his bicycle and at the beach playing with friends and relatives. Robert is survived by his children: Christopher and wife Barbara, Nancy, Peter and wife Micaela, and Jeanne. Grandpa will be remembered by grandchildren, Dylan, Ryan, Hailey, Declan, and Samantha. Robert is survived by his siblings Gregory and wife Adele, Laurette "BeBe" and husband Bill, Ms. Elaine Gannon, and Ms. Lois Gannon. He is remembered by all in the Gannon and Riley families. He was predeceased by former spouse Evelyn Gannon, July 31, 2009. Relatives and friends were invited to call on both Tuesday and Wednesday from 4-8 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Thursday, March 25th at 11:00 AM at The Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach. A farewell ceremony with military honors followed on the Ocean Grove Fishing Pier. ROGER A. COONROD, 88, of ASBURY PARK, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Michigan City, Indiana in 1921, he experienced a joyous family life there with his parents, brother Forrest and sister Maxine, studied ancient history at Indiana University in Bloomington, served in the US Army during World War II in Italy--one of a troop of soldiers who liberated Verona. In 1949 he married his wife of 55 years, Annamaria Giacomelli, in Trieste, Italy. Their adventures began with a six-month honeymoon around Europe. They lived two years in Paris where he studied art history at the Sorbonne and she studied painting at the Louvre. They set up house in Chicago in the 50's where he began selling insurance. From Chicago they moved to Hershey PA, Indianapolis and central New Jersey. Roger and Annamaria journeyed like students and after she passed he continued traveling through Israel, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and brought his intrepid joy to all he met. He was a beloved member of Lincroft Bible Church and particularly cherished the deep study of the Bible. Surviving are two daughters, Karin Coonrod Geballe of New York City and Simone Coonrod of Montclair, Karin’s husband, Jonathan Geballe, and Simone’s sons, Konrad and Barret Preuninger; his brother, Forrest Coonrod and his wife Evelyne in Seattle, Washington. Funeral services and interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, will be private. There was an open celebration of his life at the Lincroft Bible Church, 790 Newman Springs Road on Saturday, April 17 at 7:00 PM. All are invited and welcome. TONY "Nino" STOIA, 81, of OAKHURST, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. “Nino” was a hair stylist, working last at Pro Hair Design in Eatontown. Mr. Stoia was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served with the United State Marine Corps as an MP and Drill Instructor. He was active with the Deborah Foundation, Boys Clubs and Veteran’s causes. Tony loved animals and he was an avid fan of the Yankees and the NY Giants. He was predeceased by his parents, Al and Jennie Stoia and by his brothers, Ralph and Archie Stoia. Surviving are his wife, Dolores Dimodica Stoia, his two daughters, Denise and her husband Thomas Scannapieco of Jackson and Doreen Stoia of Yardley, PA his sister, Sophie Pizutelli of Union and his granddaughter, Deena Scannapieco. Relatives and friends were invited to call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Monday from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, April 20th at 10:00 AM at St. Jerome’s Roman Catholic Church, 250 Wall Street, West Long Branch, with interment following at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.

KELLY A. PAHLCK, 31, of BRICK, died Thursday, May 13, 2010 at home. She was predeceased by her grandfather, Victor Calandriello. PETER H. KNOUD, 65, of BRADLEY BEACH, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Mr. Knoud was a carpenter for John McLoughlin Construction, Bradley Beach. He was a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension, Bradley Beach, serving as an usher and singing in the church choir. Mr. Knoud was a United States Army veteran, serving in Vietnam. Peter loved all music and he was a war historian. Born in Staten Island, NY, he lived there until moving to New Jersey 27 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Paula Frank, two daughters, Katy Aebi of Belmar and Susan Andrews of Eatontown, a son, Christopher Knoud, two step daughters, Sarah and Samantha Santana, a sister, Adele Friese of Apple Valley, CA, three grand children, Conner and Caine Andrews and Defayed Aebi and his former wife, Eileen Conner Knoud. Relatives and friends were invitedto call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Saturday from 12:00 Noon, with funeral services beginning at 3:30 PM . JOSEPH CICALESE, "Joe Chick", 82, of BRADLEY BEACH and Key Largo, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Saturday June 19, 2010. Joe was born in Newark on February 29, 1928, and was raised in Kearny. Mr. Cicalese served with the United States Navy and was a detective with the Newark Police Department for 28 years, before retiring. He is survived by his loved ones, including his sister, Marion Cicalese Efantis, his nieces, Dr. JoNell Enfantis Potter and Mrs. Donna Vick and numerous family and friends including Theresa LaMotta, Margaret Scully and Charles Catrino. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday at 9:00 AM at the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach with entombment following at St. Catharine's Cemetery, Wall Township. MARGARET ELVIRA SLOCUM HOLL, 86, a long-time resident of OCEAN GROVE, died on Sunday, June 21, 2010 in Ocean Grove. She was born in Neptune Township, the daughter of Mahlon Woolley Slocum and Elvira Applegate Slocum. Her family had one of the first homesteads on Sunset Avenue in Wanamassa. She was valedictorian of Wanamassa School in 1937 and a 1941 graduate of Asbury Park High School. Starting at age 16 she was a long distance operator in the Asbury Park office of Bell Telephone Company. At the Times Publishing Company in Ocean Grove, she was local editor of the weekly Ocean Grove and Neptune Times for 21 years. She was active in civic and community affairs for many years. She was a past President of the auxiliary of the Hannah-Crossman VFW Post 2233 in Ocean Grove; past President of the auxiliary to the Stokes Fire Company, Ocean Grove; and President of the Ocean Grove PTA. She headed the Ocean Grove March of Dimes, the Heart Fund, and the Neptune Hospital Wing Drive in Ocean Grove. She served as President of the Ocean Grove Businessmen in 1974-75. She served as Cub Scout Den Mother and Leader of Cadette Girl Scouts. In the sixties, she organized a women’s bowling group known as the Squaws League. She and her mother were members of the Neptune Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. During World War II, she entertained at area USOs with other telephone company operators. Beginning in the 1950s, she directed and performed in many variety shows at the Neptune Middle School, the Ocean Grove Young People’s Temple, and the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove. Funds raised through these performances benefitted local charities. In 1969, Ocean Grove’s centennial year, she appeared in the local pageant, volunteered at the Centennial Cottage, and served as Publicity Chair for the Centennial Ball. An avid traveler, she visited Europe, Africa, Alaska, Canada, and Central and South America. Accompanied by her husband, she toured 47 of the 50 states. She encouraged her grandchildren to travel...five granddaughters accompanied her on separate cruises in the Caribbean. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Franklin Berry Holl in 2000 and by four siblings, John Slocum, Shirley Lodico, Mahlon W. Slocum Jr., and Robert Slocum. She is survived by her children, Richard F. Holl of Brick; Douglas B. Holl of Fairfax, Va., and Melinda Armstrong of Wanamassa; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Grant of Wanamassa, and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 10:00 AM, with interment following at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls Those who wish may send flowers, or a contribution to the March of Dimes, 1275 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10605, or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

SUSAN STEWART LISLE, 61, of TINTON FALLS, died Sunday July 11, 2010 at home. Susan was born and raised in South Orange and graduated from Columbia High School. She spent many summers at the beach in Ocean Grove and lived there after high school before moving to Tinton Falls in 1977. She worked at the St. Barnabas Medical Center until the birth of her first child in 1980. She devoted her time entirely to her children until they were school age and then continued to care for them when she reentered the work force, first in the Tinton Falls school system, and then for over 10 years at the
New Shrewsbury Racquet Club. She provided meals for the youth groups at her church, Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church, for over 15 years. During the summer, Susan could be found at the beach every day that the weather permitted. Her love of the beach was eclipsed only by her love of live
music. From early concerts of the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen to the current Jersey Shore rock scene, Susan could always be spotted in the crowd by her sparkling jewelry, long wild hair and easy smile. She was a devoted, kind and patient wife and mother, a lover of animals and a friend to all. She is survived by her husband, John D. Lisle, her children, Suzanne, Jonathan and Stephanie Lisle and her sister Lyndah Hawtin. A memorial service was held on Thursday at 7:00 PM at the Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church, 255 Harding Road, Red Bank. Relatives and friends were invited to call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

ANDREW SENCHAK, of OCEAN GROVE, died peacefully on July 21, 2010 at the age of 93. Andy was born on April 19, 1917 in Youngstown, Ohio, to Michael and Mary Senchak who had emigrated from Lviv, Ukraine. He graduated from Newark College of Engineering with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Senchak served during World War II as a Naval Pilot and flight instructor. After the war he was employed by ITT for 35 years, first as test pilot and later as an engineer in research and development. His projects ranged from missile defense and telecommunications to a precursor of the zip code system. He is survived by his loving family, his wife of 69 years, Evelyn, his sons, Andy and Doug, his daughter, Laurie Ranney and grandchildren, Phoebe and Christopher Banks, Alex C. Senchak, Max Senchak, Adrienne Ranney and Simone Kaplan-Senchak and a great grand daughter, Ella Rei Banks Frankenburg. He is also survived by his brothers George and Melvin Senchak. Relatives and friends may call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove on Friday, July 23rd from 4:00 - 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 9:00 AM until funeral services begin at 11:00. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
