FUNERAL HOME FACILITIES

The Ocean Grove Memorial Home is housed in a old, semi-Victorian home originally constructed by a sea captain (I think) as a private residence. The first and second floor walls are brick lined and are clapboarded or shingled on the outside and lathe and plastered on the interior walls.

The building was converted from a private home into an apartment building and then in 1956, into a funeral home with an apartment for the resident manager on the second and third floors. A two car garage was added to the rear of the building at the time it was converted. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home was operated as a satellite location until the early 1990s when the main office in Asbury Park (Farry Memorial Home) was closed and then lost to a fire.

The Main Avenue side of the building has a wrap-around awninged porch that is enclosed on the east side. Upholstered wicker furniture decorates the carpeted porch during the warm months. The antique double vestibule doors are oak, have ornate brass fixtures and beveled glass in the windows.

A wider oak door guards a small foyer with the register book stand and coat closet.

Immediately to the left of the foyer is a large sitting room often used as an overflow room during funeral ceremonies and for visiting during calling hours.

The casket is usually placed at the east end of the large main viewing/ceremony room during calling hours and for the funeral ceremony. The family and guests are usually seated in this large room during the funeral ceremony.

A warm wood panel sitting room is in the rear of the main floor along with the rest room and clergy office.

The entire main floor (except for the family room) is decorated with soft lighting, a muted yellow wall covering and soft drapes accented by a mellow green carpet for a home-like atmosphere.

The funeral arrangement conference is held in a private office on the second floor.

The casket and burial vault selection rooms are next to the arrangement office and display ten full size caskets and a selection of miniature concrete burial vaults. Burial clothing is stored in a lighted closed in the front casket selection room. Artificial funeral flowers are displayed on several caskets as examples of funeral flowers.

The remaining room on the second floor is used to display cremation merchandise, specifically cremation caskets and a wide variety of cremation urns and urn vaults for burial.

The rest of the building is not open to the public and is used for administrative purposes and storage.

The main floor of the funeral home is accessible to wheel chairs via a side entrance and a long concrete indoor ramp (that is available with the assistance of the funeral home staff, only).

A propriatary tape music system is available to play background music and a wide variety of religious and secular music during the visiting hours and just prior to the funeral ceremony.

The funeral home owns its own hearse and flower/clergy/lead car.

Floral arrangements are delivered to the private side entrance in the garage where they are accepted and marked prior to display in the funeral home.

Most generally, the funeral home is not shared and only one funeral ceremony can be accommodated at one time. Only occasionally is the funeral home split for simultaneous calling hours.
