Veteran's Administration - Benefit InformationThe family of a deceased veteran of U. S. Military Service is entitled to receive certain benefits under Federal Veterans Administration Laws.
An American Flag
After we have been given the Veteran's Discharge, we will obtain an American Flag. The flag will be placed in or on the casket until the final disposition when it will be presented to the family.A Grave Marker
You may choose to mark the veteran's grave with a free marker provided for the deceased veteran by the Veterans Administration (or with a privately purchased marker to match other markers on the plot). Not all cemeteries will allow the grave marker provided by the Veteran's Administration in addition to another existing grave marker. We advise you to contact your cemetery superintendent or our office before applying to the Veteran's Administration for a marker.Widows Monthly Allowance
To qualify for the Widow's Allowance, there are certain financial conditions regarding yearly income that have to be considered. We advise you to contact the local N. J. Veteran's Office at 601 Bangs Avenue, Asbury Park, or phone 775-7009, for further information. The Widow's Pension Benefit should be applied for in person.Free Grave (or Graves)
Free graves in a National Cemetery or in the N. J. State Veterans Cemetery are available to eligible veterans. Please discuss your options with the funeral director.Interment Allowance
If the deceased veteran was already receiving benefits from the Veterans Administration (such as a pension) or had applied for benefits which would have been granted if he had not died, he may be entitled to an In terment Allowance and a Funeral Allowance. We will assist you in filing with the Veteran's Administration for those allowances. The amounts, if the Veteran qualifies, will be $150.00 as an Interment Allowance and/or $300.00 as a Funeral Allowance. The Veteran's Administration will send this money directly to you if eligibility is established.
To apply for VETERANS ADMINISTRATION BENEFITS and PAYMENTS, these forms are needed to apply for the Veterans Administration Burial Benefit and/or the Funeral Benefit. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home will provide these forms and complete them for you once the original discharge has been provided to us. We will make photocopies of if for your use.
VA Form 21-530 Application for Burial and Interment Benefits
VA Form 21-22 Appointment of the N. J. Veterans Office as your representative
A Certified copy of the D. C. We will apply to get a free one for you .
Receipted Funeral Bill. One will be mailed to you when the funeral bill has been paid.
The Veterans Discharge or official separation document DD-215. The original discharge may be required (usually two sided)
After you receive the receipted funeral bill, send (or better, take) all these forms to:
N. J. Veterans Officer
601 Bangs Avenue Phone ahead
Asbury Park, N. J. 07712
732 775-7009To apply for a Free Veterans Grave Marker use VA Form 40-1330. We will provide you with a completed form if appropriate:
You may apply for a bronze or a granite marker. We recommend against a marble marker as marble has a tendency to break down over time. Bronze is required by memorial parks and granite is indicated for a standard cemetery.
Follow the instructions on the back of the form. Complete, sign and have your cemetery superintendent sign the form allowing the marker and accepting consigneeship (if he agrees).
Send the completed application to the address noted on the instruction sheet.
The cemetery will probably make a charge to make a concrete foundation for the marker and to place the marker on the grave.
You may have to pay that charge before they give the above signatures and you will have to pay the charges before the marker will be set.
If you have questions, please contact the Ocean Grove Memorial Home for assistance.
